CRUISE DESTINATION
Jamaica
THE QUICK READ
What Jamaica adds to a cruise
Jamaica's north-coast ports open onto waterfalls, rivers, beaches, food, music, and long scenic drives. The island is large, and Falmouth, Ocho Rios, and Montego Bay should be treated as different starting points rather than interchangeable labels.
PORT BY PORT
Where the ship may take you
CRUISE PORT
Falmouth
A purpose-built port between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, useful for long regional excursions.
Make this port day work
The port sits between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. Dunn's River Falls is commonly 60–90 minutes away; Montego Bay is closer but still a road transfer.
Use the historic port area for a light day or hire a licensed driver for one regional objective with a written return time.
Organized transport is the sensible choice for Dunn's River, rafting, caves, or resort passes because most of the product is the drive.
Start the return from Ocho Rios at least 2½ hours early and from Montego Bay about two hours early.
CRUISE PORT
Ocho Rios
A north-coast base for waterfalls, beaches, rafting, and adventure attractions.
Make this port day work
Dunn's River Falls is roughly 10–20 minutes from the port. Other falls, river activities, and mountain attractions can be 20–45 minutes away.
Town and a nearby beach can be simple, but use licensed transport and agree on the complete fare before leaving.
Reserve waterfalls, rafting, bobsled, zip lines, or Blue Hole with an operator that defines physical requirements and return timing.
Leave distant attractions about two hours early; nearby Dunn's River still deserves a 90-minute buffer.
CRUISE PORT
Montego Bay
A resort-city port offering beaches, historic estates, and access to western Jamaica.
Make this port day work
The cruise terminal is not the center of the Hip Strip. Beaches and city attractions require a short taxi; distant north-coast highlights take much longer.
Use official transport to one beach, food stop, or defined city route instead of accepting an improvised tour at the gate.
Book a tour for rafting, major estates, or distant waterfalls. Dunn's River from Montego Bay is a long day, not a nearby add-on.
Leave local beaches 90 minutes early and distant attractions at least 2½ hours early.
PRACTICAL ADVICE
Plan the day before leaving home
Start with the port name
Dunn's River Falls is close to Ocho Rios but a substantial trip from Falmouth or Montego Bay.
Use licensed transportation
Agree on route, price, stops, and return time before leaving. A private driver should be a defined service, not an improvised negotiation all day.
Wear water shoes
Falls, river, and beach excursions frequently involve slippery stone and wet entry points.

FINAL CHECK
Before committing to the day
- Confirm the exact berth. The destination name may conceal a remote facility, tender, or different side of the island.
- Calculate usable time.Subtract tendering, transfers, security, and a safe return margin from the published port call.
- Reserve what can sell out.Small boats, limited vehicles, timed admissions, and specialist guides deserve priority.
- Keep the return under your control.Save meeting details offline and know the backup transportation before moving away from the port.
