Seven nights is the standard pattern from Florida, Texas, or the Gulf Coast.
ITINERARY GUIDE
Western Caribbean
THE QUICK ANSWER
Is Western Caribbean right for you?
Western Caribbean itineraries trade some of the Eastern Caribbean's easy beach access for reefs, Maya sites, caves, wildlife, waterfalls, and longer ground transfers. The best routes are more varied, but they demand more excursion planning and a larger shore budget.
Cozumel is common; Roatán, Costa Maya, Belize, Jamaica, and Grand Cayman rotate around it.
Snorkeling, ruins, caves, waterfalls, and wildlife deliver more than staying inside the terminal.
Mainland ferries, tendering, and inland drives can turn a seven-hour call into four usable hours.
Choose Western Caribbean when the days ashore matter as much as the ship. Budget for at least one serious excursion; otherwise several purpose-built port areas can start feeling suspiciously interchangeable.
ROUTE LOGIC
How these itineraries are built
The broad sampler
Often combines Cozumel with Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Costa Maya, Belize, or Roatán. Tender risk and excursion distance should break ties.
Mexico-forward
Cozumel and Costa Maya are common, with Roatán or Belize on longer weeks. Gulf weather and the ship's first and last sea days matter.
More sea time
The river transit and longer run to the Caribbean can be part of the appeal, but compare the number of full port days.
PORT PRIORITIES
The stops that change the trip
Cozumel
Best all-rounderReefs, beach clubs, an island loop, and easy taxis work; mainland Tulum adds ferry and road risk.
Roatán
Best reef dayWest Bay and boat excursions are the draw. Confirm whether the ship uses Coxen Hole or Mahogany Bay.
Belize City
Best big excursionTendering plus long transfers make cave tubing, ruins, and reef trips days to book deliberately.
Grand Cayman
Best polished water dayStingray City and Seven Mile Beach are easy to understand, but weather can cancel the tender call entirely.
DESTINATION GUIDES
Countries and territories on these routes
No single sailing includes every place listed here. Open the destinations on the exact itinerary, then compare the port hours and arrival points rather than counting names.
SEASON AND WEATHER
When the itinerary works best
Drier and popular
Comfortable conditions and school holidays keep demand strong.
Hot, wet, and workable
Warm water is excellent; inland humidity and afternoon storms affect ruins and adventure tours.
Highest disruption risk
Storm changes and heavy rain are possible. Buy for value only if port substitutions will not ruin the trip.
PRACTICAL REALITY
What changes the experience
Mainland Mexico is a commitment
Tulum and Playa del Carmen require a crossing that can be rough plus road transportation.
Belize and Cayman lose time
Early tender priority can matter on independent tours.
Bring more than flip-flops
Ruins, caves, wet rocks, and jungle paths need secure shoes.
The return guarantee matters
Ask exactly what happens if traffic, weather, or a boat delay threatens all-aboard.
BEFORE YOU BOOK
The comparison checklist
- Confirm the exact cruise facility.Roatán and Cozumel each have materially different arrival points.
- Count tender and ferry time.Published port hours are not usable excursion hours.
- Choose one major inland day.Stacking ruins, wildlife, and a beach usually weakens all three.
- Read physical requirements.Caves, falls, and zip lines can be more demanding than the headline suggests.
- Carry cash in small bills.Taxis, lockers, tips, and small vendors may not welcome a large note or card.
